What Is Invokana?

Invokana (canagliflozin) is a diabetes medication that helps control blood sugar levels. Taken orally, Invokana works by helping to reduce the glucose in your bloodstream. Invokana is prescribed to help treat type 2 diabetes. Invokana was approved for use in the US in March 2013 and is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

Invokana Lawsuit

Invokana is part of a new class of drugs known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors, or SGLT2 inhibitors. Invokana was the first of these drugs to be approved for use in the United States.

Safety concerns have surrounded Invokana since the drug was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Several serious side effects of Invokana include:

  • – Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • – Kidney injury and kidney failure
  • – Heart attacks
  • – Strokes

Diabetic Ketoacidosis from Invokana

Invokana can lead to a serious and potentially fatal condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis, a condition where the body produces high levels of blood acids known as “ketones”. Ketoacidosis often requires hospitalization and can be fatal if left untreated.

Symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis include:
Excessive thirst
Frequent urination
Difficulty breathing
Nausea & vomiting
Abdominal pain
Confusion
Unusual fatigue or sleepiness

On May 5, 2015, the FDA released a safety announcement warning about the risks of diabetic ketoacidosis from Invokana and other SGLT2 drugs. The warning was issued after the FDA received dozens of reports of ketoacidosis, all of which required hospitalization to treat. In December 2015, the FDA ordered Janssen to update the warning label of Invokana to include information on the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Kidney Injury from Invokana

Invokana can cause serious kidney injuries, including acute kidney injury. We are currently evaluating Invokana lawsuits on behalf of people who suffered kidney injuries while taking Invokana.

On June 14, 2016, the FDA released a safety announcement strengthening the warnings about the risk of acute kidney injury from Invokana. Acute kidney injury is a condition in which the kidneys suddenly stop working, causing dangerous levels of wastes to build up in the bloodstream and body.

From March 2013 to October 2015, 101 confirmable cases of acute kidney injury were reported to the FDA through the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System. In about half of these cases, the acute kidney injury condition occurred within one month of starting Invokana.

Heart Attack and Stroke from Invokana

Invokana also carries the risk of cardiovascular side effects, including heart attack and stroke.
