One of the nation’s preeminent class action and mass tort attorneys. Arnold Levin was not only a prominent Philadelphia attorney and a founding partner of Levin Sedran & Berman, but an attorney who practiced law nationwide, and was inducted into the prestigious Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame in 2025. He was a trial lawyer and appellate lawyer, and usually heavily involved in negotiating settlements in complex cases. In the early years of his practice, he focused on admiralty, but then he evolved his practice to focus on environmental, product liability (including defective medical devices and dangerous pharmaceuticals) and antitrust litigation.

Mr. Levin graduated Temple University (B.S., Honors, 1961) and Temple Law School (LL.B., 1964), where he served as Articles Editor of the Temple Law Quarterly. Mr. Levin served in the United States Army (MPC) before launching his legal career.

Mr. Levin was an active member of numerous legal organizations during his career. Mr. Levin served as Chairman of the Commercial Litigation Section of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (now known as the American Association for Justice) and as a co-chairman of the Antitrust Section of the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association. He served as a member of the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Consultation Committee, Class Action Section, a fellow of the Roscoe Pound Foundation and as past Vice-Chairman of the Maritime Insurance Law Committee of the American Bar Association. He was also a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers and was chosen by his peers to be listed in Best Lawyers of America.

Mr. Levin was admitted to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, multiple U.S. District Courts, various Circuit Courts of Appeal, and the U.S. Supreme Court. In Diet Drugs, American Home Products Corporation agreed to a multi-billion-dollar settlement of a class-action lawsuit brought by patients who experienced heart defects after taking the company’s Pondimin and Redux diet pills, sometimes in combination with phentermine. The class-action settlement still represents one of the largest monetary rewards for a product liability case in history — over 11,000 plaintiffs filed 6,500 separate lawsuits, but the settlement involved all of the six million users of the Fen-Phen combination. It resulted in a total payout to the class of $7.65 billion. In In re: National Football League Players’ Concussion Litigation, MDL No. 2323 (E.D. Pa.) Mr. Levin was appointed as Subclass Counsel for Subclass 1 of that Class Action Settlement. This settlement was instrumental in changing the way the NFL handles head injuries. Mr. Levin was also a member of the Trial and Discovery Committees in the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Litigation, No. 89-095 (D. Alaska) In addition, Mr. Levin served as Lead Counsel in the prosecution of individual fishing permit holders, native corporations, native villages, native claims and business claims.
