Dangers from Nicotine in JUUL Devices

JUUL devices contain a high amount of nicotine, a dangerous and highly addictive chemical. One JUUL pod contains as much nicotine as 20 cigarettes, or one whole pack.

The nicotine levels found in JUUL pods can be dangerous. The Food and Drug Administration has received reports of seizures, mostly involving youth and young adult users. According to the FDA, seizures and convulsions are known side effects of nicotine toxicity or nicotine poisoning.

Nicotine poisoning occurs when you have too much nicotine in your system. The amount that causes a nicotine overdose depends on multiple factors such as body weight and the source of the nicotine, meaning young people may be at a higher risk.

JUUL pods may be more likely to cause nicotine poisoning due to two factors:

  • JUUL pods have higher concentration of nicotine than cigarettes and other e-cigarette products
  • The JUUL pod formulation allows for faster absorption of nicotine from the vapor

Other side effects from nicotine can include:

  • Dizziness and lightheadedness
  • Lung Injury
  • Muscle tremors and pain
  • Joint pain
  • Increased risk of stroke
  • Cardiovascular side effects
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Increased risk of blood clots

JUUL and Teens: A Major Public Health Concern

One of the most significant concerns about JUUL and other e-cigarette devices is the number of adolescents and young adults who are now using the products. There has been a huge increase in the number of teenagers who are using e-cigarettes like JUUL.

A report from the Food and Drug Administration revealed that e-cigarette use in high school students increased by 1.3 million between 2017 and 2018. This rapid increase has reversed decades of progress in the fight against nicotine addiction in adolescents. Vaping Youth - prevalence for 8th Graders, 10th Graders and 12th Graders in USA

JUUL Advertising to Youth and Minors

Juul Vapor Electronic Cigarette

One of the main points of emphasis in many JUUL lawsuits is the advertising targeted at young adults and minors. When JUUL first launched, ads were clearly targeted towards youth. These ads showed attractive young models, bright colors, and depicted teenage behavior while using JUUL devices. Heavily flavored JUUL pods also increased appeal with minors and young adults, with catchy names such as “Cool Mint”, “Crème Brulee”, and “Fruit Medley”. In addition, the JUUL devices were created to look like a USB thumb drive, making them easy to conceal in a school setting.

JUUL also used specific marketing channels to reach a younger audience, such as social media and digital advertising. These campaigns were highly effective, and JUUL quickly became the market leader. In response to a growing outcry about their advertising practices, JUUL deleted most of their social media posts, advertisements, and pages, but not before millions of young adults were addicted to JUUL products.

Learn More About JUUL Lawsuits

Among other claims, JUUL lawsuits allege that:
JUUL devices can cause lung injuries, seizures, strokes, and other serious side effects from nicotine poisoning
JUUL manufactured and marketed a device that was more addictive due to increased concentration of nicotine and a formula that delivers more nicotine than a traditional cigarette and other e-cigarettes
JUUL used false and misleading advertising to represent their product as a safe alternative to cigarettes
JUUL targeted young adults and minors with aggressive marketing campaigns, causing millions of minors to become addicted to nicotine

Several JUUL lawsuits have already been filed in courts around the country. These lawsuits allege that JUUL manufacturers deceptively marketed the product as safe and targeted minors and young adults specifically.

In addition, lawsuits allege that the high nicotine content in JUUL devices have caused seizures, strokes, heart complications, and other serious injuries in both minors and adults.
