Elmiron Lawsuits
Elmiron lawsuits allege that the drug maker, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson company, failed to disclose links between use of the drug and serious vision damage and that they failed to warn patients about this risk.
Multiple recent studies suggest a causal link between taking Elmiron and development of serious and possibly permanent damage to eyesight.
In June of 2020, Janssen updated the Elmiron labeling to inform users of potential vision problems, but this may be too late for millions of IC sufferers who have been prescribed Elmiron in the time since it came onto the market in 1996.

What is Elmiron?
Elmiron is the brand name of pentosan polysulfate sodium, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996 as the only FDA-approved oral medication designed to treat bladder pain and discomfort associated with interstitial cystitis (IC). IC, sometimes called “painful bladder syndrome,” is a chronic bladder condition with no known cure.
Because Elmiron was thought to be generally safe and low risk, with infrequent and mild side effects, it has been prescribed to millions of IC sufferers over the years, often at high and increasing dosages. However, multiple recent studies suggest a causal link between Elmiron use and serious, possible permanent vision damage due to macular toxicity.
Elmiron use may be linked with development of the following diseases: |
---|
Pigmentary maculopathy |
Retinal maculopathy |
Macular degeneration |
Other side effects that may be associated with Elmiron use: |
---|
Blurred vision |
Night blindness |
Difficulty reading |
Eye pain |
Vision disturbances, such as dark or blurred spots in the visual field |
Loss of close vision |
Visual dimming |
Blindness |
Diagnosis of macular disorders such as pigmentary maculopathy caused by Elmiron use may require imaging studies or consultation with a retina specialist.
